Security Awareness for SMEs - Recent BBC article

You may have seen the recent article published on the BBC business website at www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17432713. It focuses on many of the points we have raised in our series of FYI articles, but underlines how important it is for SMEs to follow the strong, established security procedures undertaken by large multinationals and governmental organisations. The article features a recent survey by Symantec which found that many small firms are indeed aware of many of the security issues such as keystroke logging, the use of smartphones and personally owned laptops and tablets, but believe they won’t be targeted due to their size and that the hackers are really only interested in attacking the “big boys”.

This blinkered view contrasts sharply with the words of Ross Walker, Symantec’s Director of Small Business who says hackers are going after ‘low hanging fruit’, companies who do not necessarily rate security as a priority, are less security aware and do not have the proper defences in place”. Our previous two FYI articles covered some of the threats organisations face from malware, so it was particularly disturbing to read in the Symantec report that 60 per cent of the small businesses surveyed admitted to not installing anti-virus software on all of their computers. Even more disturbingly this includes machines used for online banking...

Why you need us

The Information Security threat landscape is constantly evolving. It is no longer sufficient to merely ensure your business systems are implementing up to date anti-virus software. There are many additional threats to consider including how data is stored, used and shared. The advent of devices such as smartphones, USB sticks and tablets in addition to laptop computers enable business people to access more and more data in increasingly easy formats. But with this increased functionality comes added security risks. That is why security awareness is more important than ever before, and this is where Stark Rogers can help you and your staff through awareness programmes aimed at staff from all levels.

We can professionally review and assess all aspects of your security policies. We have a wealth of knowledge and experience of real security issues and incidents that we can deploy to prevent incidents happening to your company.

Are you aware?...

Are you and your staff aware of some of the threats your company might be vulnerable to?

Consumerisation

Use of personally owned devices for personal and business data.

Data Loss

Are you aware of the many ways your data can be lost or fall into the wrong hands?

Insider Threat

Often one of the biggest sources of data loss comes from within your own company. Your staff may not be acting maliciously, but they may be compromising your data simply through not knowing how to handle data securely.

Malware

Not a new threat, but still very significant. Levels of cyber crime are accelerating rapidly and anti-virus companies are finding it harder to keep pace with the “bad guys”.

Social Engineering

Not to be confused with social networking (Facebook etc.), it is not only your information at risk, also your material assets can be vulnerable to social engineering attacks, e.g. an unauthorised attacker gaining access to your premises to steal property. These kinds of attacks can vary to include telephone and email attacks.

Stark Rogers can help you with all of these threats by reviewing you existing security procedures and advising how to maintain them to deal with contemporary threats.
